The Coin in the Cake: Drachma or Euro – Which Luck Goes Into the Vasilopita in 2027?

Picture a cake. Somewhere inside it is hidden a coin. Whoever finds it in their slice has luck – for the whole year. That's how the new year begins in many Greek families: with the vasilopita.

What Is a Vasilopita?

The vasilopita is the New Year's cake, named after Saint Basil, whose day is celebrated on 1 January. A coin, the “flouri”, is baked into the dough. The cake is cut at the turn of the year, and the slice with the coin is considered a lucky charm. Details differ from family to family, and that's exactly what makes the custom so lovely.

And the Drachma?

At the Drachmen Fest on 29.09., our four-course menu cost 29 drachmas. Ever since, one question has been on our minds: if a drachma still plays a role at the table after almost 25 years – wouldn't it be the perfect coin for a New Year's cake? Thank you once more to everyone who was there, and to everyone who celebrated with us in spirit. As every year, we're already heading toward the next Drachmen Fest: in one year, and we'll announce the date in good time.

The Big Debate: Drachma or Euro?

The drachma stands for memory: for what was, and for stories from drawers. The euro stands for the present: for what we hold in our hands when we step into the new year. Both have charm. Both have fans. But only one kind of coin can go in the cake.
