The Drachma Bet: 1 Euro, 340.75 Drachmas – and the Question of What It's Worth to You

2 min read

Tonight from 5 pm: Drachmen Fest at our place, Arndtstraße 12. It's today – and after that, only 5 days until our summer break.

Now, the bet.

You have one euro in your pocket. Just one. The question isn't what you can buy with it – the question is what you would buy with it.

And before you answer, one fact that complicates things: when the euro was introduced, the conversion rate for Greece was fixed at 340.75 drachmas per 1 euro. Your single euro would suddenly be a small fortune of three hundred and forty coins and change. It sounds like a lot. It even feels like a lot – until you realise the number on its own says nothing at all.

Why this bet is fun in the first place

Money is only worth what we grant it in our heads. Hold 340 drachmas and you feel rich. Hold one euro and you feel normal. Same money, two feelings. That's exactly why we celebrate the Drachmen Fest: not as nostalgia for money, but as a wink – an evening when the numbers on the menu sound different for once and everyone laughs about it.

The bet, in two camps

There are two kinds of people when it comes to a single euro:

Team Small Change: A euro is a loose-change adventure. A little here, a little there, and you end up with four small joys.

Team One Moment: A euro is a euro. You put it on the table and pick the one thing that's worth it – or you save it for later.

Your vote counts

Two comments are waiting for you below this article. Answer with a Reply to the one that suits you:

  • Team Small Change – and tell us what you'd split your euro into many small pieces for.

  • Team One Moment – and tell us what that one thing would be.

We read every answer. And since everyone will be here tonight anyway: feel free to tell us in person at the table, too.

Tonight at our place

The Drachmen Fest starts today, Tuesday, 29 September, at 5 pm – with live music and prices that sound like they come from another time. Drop by, bring friends, and let's find out together who wins the best bet tonight.

Reservations: 030 612 85 386 – or just walk in.

One more thing: we're closed for our break from 4 to 15 October. From Friday, 16 October, we're back for you. So: tonight is one more chance to celebrate with us.

We're waiting for you! 🏺
