What Your Coffee Grounds Reveal About You: The Greek Art of Reading Coffee Cups

At the end of a Greek meal, the bill rarely comes first – the coffee does. And when you order a Greek coffee at our place, you don't just get a drink. In the end you also get a little riddle: the cup with the grounds at the bottom.

Greek coffee isn't filtered. Finely ground powder is boiled directly with water (and sugar, depending on taste) in a small copper pot called a briki – with plenty of foam on top, which is important. It is drunk slowly, in small sips, because in the last third of the cup the grounds are waiting: fine, dark coffee sludge that settles at the bottom.

And this is exactly where the real tradition begins: kafemandia, reading the coffee grounds. Once the cup is drained, it is turned upside down onto the saucer, you wait a few minutes until the grounds have cooled and dried, turn the cup three times in a circle – and then you look inside. The patterns the grounds leave on the inner walls are supposed to form shapes: a bird, a heart, a path, a ring. Every grandmother has her own interpretation, and no two tell the story the same way.

Nobody takes it really seriously today – and that's exactly the point. Kafemandia was never fortune-telling in an esoteric sense. It was an excuse to stay at the table. A reason to keep talking for another ten minutes, to lean over the cup, to laugh together when someone sees “a rich husband” or “a big journey” in the coffee dregs. In Greek homes it was never about predicting the future, but about sociable time – women (traditionally it was mostly women) sitting together after the meal, when the men had long since moved on to ouzo.

At Mastiha Mezedopolio we serve Greek coffee deliberately slowly – not as a to-go nightcap, but as an invitation to stay a little longer. So feel free to order one at the end of your visit, drink it in peace, and if you like, turn the cup over. What you see in it is entirely up to you – but we promise: at least ten extra good minutes at our table are guaranteed.
